OAK BROOK--For the 21st consecutive year, the Rotary Club of Oak Brook presented Savings Bonds and Certificate awards to the winners of the Butler-Oak Brook Rotary Essay Contest for the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
The Essay Contest, founded by Oak Brook Rotarian Dino H. Pavlakos in conjunction with Butler Junior High School in Oak Brook, was designed to challenge Butler students on an individual basis, every student being presented with the same topic and completing his or her essay in class with no help whatsoever.
In sixth grade, Ava Gaddis won first place, while Ayah Albareedi received second. Mary Huber claimed first place in seventh grade, and Carolyn Chun was awarded second. In eighth grade, Sarah Feng won first place, while Nicole Burjek claimed second. The winners were awarded on Portfolio Day.
The Rotary Club of Oak Brook attributes the longevity and endurance of the Essay Contest to Butler Junior High's collective caring and concern towards educational achievements, as well as the love of education embodied in parents and family members.
Butler Junior High and the Rotary Club of Oak Brook said they are proud of this year's winners, and look forward to many more years of Essay Contests.
